Murtaza Syed appointed as new Deputy Governor of State Bank of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has appointed Murtaza Syed as the deputygovernor of the State Bank of Pakistan. He has been appointed for threeyears.

Murtaza had worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at differentimportant positions.

A notification for the appointment of Murtaza Syed as the deputy governorof the bank was issued by the Finance Ministry.

In pursuance of section 10(4) of the State Bank of Pakistan Act, 1956, thefederal government is pleased to appoint Murtaza Syed as deputy governorSBP for a period of three years with immediate effect.

According to the IMF, Murtaza Syed is a deputy division chief in the IMF’sStrategy, Policy and Review Department. He joined the Fund in 2004 and haspreviously worked in the Fiscal Affairs and Asia and Pacific Departments.

Prior to his current assignment, he was IMF’s deputy residentrepresentative in China. He has been involved in IMF programs andsurveillance of various emerging markets and advanced economies, includingColombia, Cyprus, the Euro Area, Korea, and Japan.

His analytical work has covered macro-financial linkages, fiscal andmonetary policy, financial crises, investment, demographics, and inequality.

Before joining the Fund, Mr. Syed worked at the Institute for FiscalStudies in London and the Human Development Centre in Islamabad. He has aPh.D. in economics from the University of Oxford.
