IMF gives a blow to government of Pakistan

International Monetary Fund (IMF) has prevented Pakistan from grantingrelief to power consumers who use over 200 units of electricity monthly. The IMF argued that providing relief on electricity bills would not reducethe circular debt issue in Pakistan.

Instead, relief in the form of delayed bill payments will only be offeredto consumers consistently using under 200 units for six consecutive months. If a consumer exceeds 200 units in their bill within six months, thisrelief will be withdrawn, as per the sources.

Earlier, the Caretaker Minister for Energy and Petroleum, Muhammad Ali,stated that the IMF had not rejected the proposal for additional subsidiesin power tariffs, amid protests against high electricity bills, and thatthe government was actively sharing data on electricity bills with the IMF
