Pervaiz Musharraf treason case: New developments made

ISLAMABAD – New developments have surfaced in the former President General(R) Pervaiz Musharraf treason case in the special court.The special court hearing the high treason case against former presidentPervez Musharraf on Monday summoned the interior secretary on August 27.

Presided over by Justice Yawar Ali, the court will also consider whetherthe trial can continue without recording Musharraf’s statement.

Advocate Akhtar Shah, counsel for the former president, said his clientwould appear if the defence ministry provided security. The court observedthat it is the federal government’s duty to provide security for theaccused and adjourned the hearing of the case till August 27.

Earlier, lawyer Akram Sheikh had stepped down as the head of theprosecution team tasked by the previous federal government to prosecuteMusharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution.

According to sources, the decision to resume the case pertaining toimposition of extra-constitutional emergency in the country in 2007 wasdecided in a meeting held on August 1 between three members of the benchnamely; Lahore High Court Justice Yawar Ali, Balochistan High Court’sJustice Tahira Safdar and Sindh High Court’s Nazar Akbar.
