CHITRAL (APP): Heavy rains and flash floods in streams coupled with land sliding blocked Lowari tunnel for all kind of traffic and also damamged Lowar tunnel No. 2 and cut off Chitral district from other areas.

According to Director National Highway Authority (NHA) Afzal Khan, the flash flood and land sliding on late Sunday night blocked the roads causing traffic jam on both side of the tunnel.

He said the authority is cleaning the roads to open the tunnel, adding the road would hopefully be reopened with 12 hours. However, the people stuck in traffic jam blamed NHA for slow pace of work to clear the road and said that hundreds of people are stranded on both side of the tunnel.

He further said that crushing machineries, tractors, trucks and other vehicles of a foreign construction company who were engaged in work on Lowari tunnel were also damaged and buried under land sliding; however, no loss of life was reported.
