ATC Ruling Brings New Trouble for PTI

RAWALPINDI: A special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday cancelled the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Alia Hamza due to her absence and failure to pursue the case.

According to court proceedings, Judge Amjad Ali Shah was hearing bail petitions filed by PTI leaders in connection with protests held during September, October, and November 2024. The court noted that Hamza had already faced bail cancellation once before for failing to appear, and therefore dismissed her interim bail again on the same grounds.

In contrast, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja’s interim bail was extended until September 3. Prosecutor Zaheer Shah told the court that the accused were deliberately avoiding proceedings and not cooperating with investigators, which was hindering both investigation and trial.

Separately, the court adjourned the hearing of Senator Azam Swati’s bail application until August 27. Swati could not attend the session due to an appearance at the Peshawar High Court, and his lawyer submitted a request for exemption on his behalf.
