AIOU free education programme upgraded: Report

ISLAMABAD – Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has upgraded its planproviding free education to marginalized sections of the people.

There are four categories of such people who will enjoy full fee-waiverinclude prisoners, disable persons, drops-out girls, and transgendercommunity, a press release said on Sunday.

This is part of special initiatives taken by the Vice Chancellor Prof DrShahid Siddiqui to ensure availability of education to all sections of thepeople.

The University has also announced providing Matriculation education to themarginalized areas that include Baluchistan and federally administratedtribal areas.

This is aimed at helping the less-privileged people to have a respectablelife in the society. Besides this, the University also providesscholarships and fee-waiver to talented students who are unable to continuetheir future study due to financial constraints. There is a specialmerit-based scheme for this purpose.

Dr Shahid Siddiqui hoped that the people, come under these categories willtake benefit from the facility, enrolling themselves with the Universityfrom the new academic session. The last date for admission to this effectis September 5.

The AIOU is the only university in the country that provides free educationto down-trodden people at their door-step. Recently, various steps havebeen taken to bring about qualitative improvement in the University’soverall learning and teaching system to ensure quality education.
