NEW YORK – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiteratedoffer of dialogues between Pakistan and India.
He expressed the hope that Pakistan and India would be able to engage in ameaningful dialogue to resolve their disputes.
In a press conference in New York, answering to a question posed by aPakistani journalist regarding the constant tension between theneighbouring countries and recent efforts made by Pakistan’s Prime MinisterImran Khan to hold peace talks with India the UN chief wished that Pakistanand India would “engage in a meaningful dialogue”.
Referring to the damning 14th June UN report calling for the establishmentof a ‘commission of inquiry’ to investigate the grave human rightsviolations in Indian-occupied Kashmir, the UN chief said that “The Officeof the High Commissioner for Human Rights has produced recently a verydetailed report. So the UN has clearly done its job in that regard.”
In his statement, Guterres said “I’ve been offering my good offices inrelation to the dialogue between the two countries that, until now, had noconditions of success.
“I hope that the importance of both India and Pakistan is such ininternational affairs, I hope that the two countries will be able to engagein a meaningful dialogue,” he added.
Later, Guterres wrote on Twitter: “We need international cooperation morethan ever, but simply saying this will not make it happen.
