NEW YORK: Pakistan has been given presidentship of UN disarmament conference on March 21.
Pakistan's Ambassador in Geneva, Tehmina Janjua will take over the presidency of the Conference.
65 member states will participate in the Conference and its agenda will be to discuss nuclear disarmament, prevention from the race of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and transparency in armaments.
Pakistan is a permanent member of Conference since its inception in 1978.
The Conference has produced legal instruments like Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
Pakistan foreign affairs ministry said in a statement “Pakistan remains constructively committed to the effective functioning of the CD. As President of the CD, Pakistan will strive to advance CD’s agenda in a balanced, cooperative and consensus-based manner.”
The organization was established in 1979 after the first session of UN on disarmament held in 1978.
Last time Pakistan held the conference presidency 11 years ago in 2005.
