Thousands of paramilitary troops deployed in Bangladesh ahead of deadly elections

DHAKA – In Bangladesh, more than 20,000 paramilitary guards have deployedacross the country amid mounting deadly violence ahead of general electionwill be held 30th of this month.

At least six people have been killed in clashes over the past week duringthe bitter campaigning between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling AwamiLeague and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Border Guard Bangladesh spokesman Mohsin Reza said 1,016 platoons had beendeployed in a bid to reinforce campaign security.

Election Commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said thousands more troopswould be deployed from Saturday.
