Nuclear Security: Pakistan government takes important step with IAEA

ISLMABAD – Muhammad Naeem, Chairman, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission andDazhu Yang, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department ofTechnical Cooperation, signed Pakistan’s Country Programme Framework (CPF)for the period of 2020–2025 on 17 September 2019. A CPF is the frame ofreference for the medium-term planning of technical cooperation between aMember State and the IAEA and identifies priority areas where the transferof nuclear technology and technical cooperation resources will be directedto support national development goals.

Pakistan has been an IAEA Member State since 1957. Its 2020–2025 CPFidentifies nine priority areas:

1. Food and agriculture 2. Human health 3. Water resource management 4. Nuclear safety 5. Radioactive waste management 6. Nuclear power development 7. Industrial applications 8. Climate change and environmental protection 9. Nuclear security and physical protection
