Pakistan Boycotts Asia Cup in India amid Security Concerns

ISLAMABAD, August 18, 2025 — The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has officially announced its withdrawal from the 2025 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in Rajgir, Bihar, India, from August 27 to September 7. The decision was made due to escalating security concerns and political tensions between the two neighboring countries. PHF emphasized that the safety and dignity of its players remain the top priority.

Despite the Indian government’s assurance of providing visas and facilitating travel for the Pakistani team, the PHF maintained its stance against participating in the tournament. ()

In response to Pakistan’s withdrawal, the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has extended an invitation to Bangladesh to fill the vacant spot in the eight-team tournament. Bangladesh has confirmed its participation, with preparations already underway.

The Asia Cup serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2026 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium. Pakistan’s absence from the tournament may impact its chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

This development underscores the complex interplay between sports and politics in the region and raises questions about the future of international sporting engagements between India and Pakistan.
