The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued a notification regarding the implementation of a new levy on petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles. A 1% levy has been imposed on locally manufactured and imported vehicles with engine capacities below 1300cc.
According to the FBR, the new levy has been titled the Energy Vehicle Adoption Levy.
FBR officials stated that the purpose of the levy is to discourage the use of petrol and diesel vehicles. A 1% levy has been imposed on local and imported vehicles below 1300cc, as well as on locally manufactured and imported pickup trucks, buses, and trucks.
As per the report, vehicles between 1300cc and 1800cc will be subject to a 2% Energy Vehicle Levy, while vehicles exceeding 1800cc, whether local or imported, will face a 3% levy.
The FBR clarified that for vehicles manufactured or assembled in Pakistan, the manufacturer will be responsible for paying the levy. For imported vehicles, the concerned importer will be required to pay the Energy Vehicle Adoption Levy.
The aim of this levy is to encourage consumers to shift toward electric vehicles.
