*LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, onMonday, took suo motu notice of wedding halls construction within thevicinity of the University of Punjab.*

A two-judge bench under the supervision of Chief Justice Saqib Nisar washearing the case at the Lahore registry of the Supreme Court.

“On what basis have commercial construction been permitted to carry outwithin the vicinity of the varsity,” Chief Justice Nisar crossly questioned.

The petition was initially filed by a citizen against the commercialconstruction in the varsity, CJP Nisar turned the petition into a suomotu notice.

The top judge has asked Lahore Development Authority to submit a reply overthe construction work.

While hearing the case of illegal appointments of vice-chancellors, thecourt directed the Punjab government to immediately appoint a newvice-chancellor for Punjab university.

Earlier today, the apex court gave the orders to suspend thevice-chancellor Dr Zakaria Zakar of University of Punjab.

Chief Justice Nisar also asked that why hasn’t a continuous vice-chancellorbeen appointed at the university in the last 2.5 years. “Please inform uswho is responsible for this,” he remarked.
