Afghan Taliban responds over the UN Security Council resolution on Afghanistan

The Taliban link Friday welcomed a UNlink Council resolution formallyextending the world body’s presence linkin Afghanistan link, although thegovernment of the hardline Islamist group remains unrecognised by theinternational community.

Thursday’s resolution — which avoids using the word “Taliban” — allowsthe UN link to continue work in Afghanistanlink, still reeling after decades ofwar and whose economy was devastated when the international community cutoff aid as the group took power last year.

The vote to extend the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistanlink) was 14 in favour, with oneabstention — by Russia.

The UN link has not yet recognised the Talibanlink pick of envoy to the body, and theresolution does not give the new government international recognition.

The mission includes several strands of cooperation, on humanitarian andpolitical issues as well as on human rights, including those of women,children and journalists.

“We consider the extension of the mandate of UNAMA as a good step and wantthem to work effectively for solving humanitarian and other problems inAfghanistan link,” Talibanlink Zabihullah Mujahid told AFPFriday.
