FATF starts discussing Pakistan for Counter Terrorism watch list

PARIS – *Discussions on Washington’s proposal to incorporate Pakistan onthe list of countries supporting terrorism started on Sunday in Paris by aglobal anti-money laundering agency. *

Pakistan, if included on the list, will face enormous difficulties in termsof global money deals and foreign investors will face restrictions on theirinvestments in Pakistan.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global anti-money launderingwatchdog, is an intergovernmental organization that maintains grey andblack lists for identifying countries that have failed to stopmoney-laundering and who finance terrorism.

The meeting, that started on Sunday, will last a week.

In addition to discussions on Pakistan, the funding of the construction ofweapons of mass destruction by some countries, and the efforts of Iceland,Norway and Spain to counter money laundering are also on the agenda.

Two weeks ago, the United States proposed the inclusion of Pakistan on thelist of countries sponsoring terrorists. The UK, France and Germany alsocame out in support of this move.

Over 700 delegates from FATF, as well as the United Nations, InternationalMonetary Fund, World Bank and other partners, will attend the meetings.
