Welfare of journalists is top priority of government: Marriyum

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb says the government is making all-out efforts for the protection and welfare of the journalists.

She was talking to a delegation of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists in Islamabad on Friday.

She said that work is underway on a bill for the protection and welfare of the journalists. She said that the draft of the bill has been sent to all the press clubs and media bodies for incorporation of suggestions for improvement.

The Minister of State said that protection and welfare of the journalists is top priority of the democratic government.

Earlier, talking to European Union Ambassador to Pakistan Jean François Cautain in Islamabad, Marriyum Aurangzeb said Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with European Union.

She said the government is taking concrete steps for capacity building of media persons in Pakistan and hoped that EU will cooperate with Pakistan in such training programs.

She said that the government believes in freedom of expression and an independent media is very crucial for democracy and for a civilized society.

The European Union Ambassador assured the Minister of State for cooperation in media and cultural sectors.
