UN to resume Secuirty Council reforms negotiations

The long-running Inter-Governmental Negotiations, aimed at reforming the UN Security Council, will resume on 25th of this month, to build on the work done in its previous meetings.

This was stated by President UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkir at a press conference in New York.

He said he has held negotiations with almost every group involved in the reform process but it is a very complex challenge that is closely linked to peace and security.

Bozkir said dialogue among member states is the most effective way to bring the reform process forward.

Despite a general agreement on enlarging the Security Council, member states remain sharply divided over the details.

The Pakistan and Italy-led "Uniting for Consensus" group firmly opposes any additional permanent members, arguing that such move will not make the body more effective and undermine the fundamental principle of democracy that is based on periodic elections.

During a General Assembly debate on the Security Council reform in November, Pakistan's UN Ambassador Munir Akram said the UfC’s proposal reflect the most suitable basis for an agreement on comprehensive reforms.

He said if it is approved, it will obtain the largest possible support in the General Assembly and essential ratification of all five permanent members.
