Iranian FM calls Pakistani counterpart, discuss post abduction scenario

ISLAMABAD – Foreign Minister of Iran Javad Zarif Wednesday called ForeignMinister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to discuss the situation arising followingthe abduction of Iranian guards near Pakistan-Iran border point ofMirjaveh, on October 16.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi expressed his serious concern on theincident.He also briefed Mr Zarif about the active efforts launched by the Pakistanlaw enforcement agencies to ascertain the whereabouts of the missingIranian guards, in coordination with the Iranian military and intelligencecounterparts, said a press release issued by the Ministry of ForeignAffairs.

During the telephonic conversation it was noted that the two DirectorsGeneral (Military Operations) were in close contact through hotline tocoordinate the search and rescue efforts including enhanced airsurveillance and troops’ deployment in the border area where the incidenttook place.

Foreign Minister Qureshi said that such incidents are the handy work of ourcommon enemies unhappy with the existing close, friendly relations betweenPakistan and Iran.Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment of not allowing anyone succeed in suchmalicious efforts, Qureshi noted that Pakistan and Iran have traditionallyshared a ‘border of peace and friendship’ which would be maintained in thesame spirit.

Thanking the Foreign Minister, Mr Javad Zarif underscored Iran’s desire toovercome all hurdles jointly with Pakistan in maintaining complete peacealong the Pak-Iran border.
