KARACHI: The Sindh sector commander of the Pakistan Rangers has suspended the personnel involved in the alleged misconduct with Karachi University (KU) professor Dr. Afaaq Ahmed, the university’s teachers’ association confirmed on Thursday.
The Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) issued a statement following a meeting held at the staff club, addressing the recent incident in which a Rangers official slapped Dr. Ahmed three days earlier. The confrontation occurred when the professor reportedly asked the official not to burn garbage near his residence in the university’s staff colony.
As a result of the assault, Dr. Ahmed’s glasses were broken and he sustained an eye injury.
In response, KUTS had earlier demanded a fair and impartial investigation, calling for appropriate disciplinary action. During Thursday’s meeting, Dr. Ahmed recounted the incident in detail. The matter was immediately brought to the attention of Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, who assured swift resolution.
Following the incident, both the VC and the KUTS president visited Dr. Ahmed at his residence to express their support. The teachers’ body also confirmed that senior Rangers officials met with the professor, condemned the incident, and assured him of corrective measures.
The Rangers sector commander personally met Dr. Ahmed, suspended the personnel involved, and ordered the initiation of disciplinary proceedings. Rangers officials expressed regret over the incident and promised that strict action would be taken.
Dr. Ahmed, in turn, expressed his complete satisfaction with the response from the university administration and law enforcement authorities. He extended his gratitude to VC Dr. Iraqi, KUTS President Dr. Mohsin Ali, and Secretary Dr. Maroof Bin Rauf for their support.
Participants of the meeting unanimously appreciated the efforts and swift action taken by the university leadership and Rangers officials in addressing the matter.
