Syeda Tahira Safdar: Pakistan to have first ever female Chief Justice

QUETTA – Syeda Tahira Safdar is most likely to be appointed as the firstwoman Chief Justice in Balochistan High Court (BHC). This development isdoubly significant given the fact that she will also be considered as thefirst female Chief Justice in Pakistan.

Chairman of Judicial Court of Pakistan (JCP), Chief Justice Saqib Nisarwill hold a meeting on Monday, July 30th, that would appoint Syeda TahiraSafdar as the new Chief Justice of BHC for the next 5 years.

She is expected to replace the current Chief Justice ‘Muhammad NoorMuskanzei’ of BHC on his retirement. He is scheduled to retire on 1stSeptember this year as he was appointed back in December 2014.

Mrs. Safdar was born on Oct 5, 1957, in Quetta. She also happens to be thedaughter Syed Imtiaz Hussain Baqri Hanafi, a renowned lawyer.

After receiving basic education from Cantonment Public School in Quetta,she went on to get her bachelor’s degree from the Government Girls College,Quetta. She got her law degree from the University Law College, Quetta in1980. She also holds a Master’s degree in Urdu literature from theUniversity of Balochistan.

She passed a competitive exam held by the Balochistan Public ServiceCommission after which she was appointed as a civil judge on April 22,1982.Senior Civil Judge on June 29, 1987.Additional District and SessionsJudge on February 27, 1991.District and Sessions Judge, On March 1,1996.The presiding officer in the Labour Court.Member of the BalochistanServices Tribunal on Oct 22, 1998.Chairperson of the Balochistan ServicesTribunal on July 10, 2009.Additional Judge of the high court on Sept 7,2009.Balochistan High Court appointed her a regular judge on May 11, 2011.

Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar is a Member of the AdministrationCommittee.Member of Committee for drafting rules, regulations,notifications, circulars, and to examine the rules and theirparticulars.One of the three judges of Special Court that conductedthe trial for high treason against Gen. Pervez Musharraf on November 20,2013.
