Indian Army working on major reform initiative with structural changes: Report

NEW DELHI – The Indian Army is working on a major reform initiative underwhich structural changes may be brought in to make the force ‘leaner andmeaner’.

Official sources said a high-level committee is currently consideringvarious options including cadre restructuring as part of the initiative.

They said the aim of the exercise is aimed at readying a larger talent poolfor crucial tasks and bringing down the age of those commanding keyformations.

They said the committee is also examining various options to bring down theage of commands at all levels and ensure deploying the right person for theright job.

The sources said the committee is expected to make recommendations forlonger tenures of brigade commanders, divisional commanders and corecommanders.

The world’s second largest standing Army has been undertaking a series ofreforms and procuring various weapon systems to bolster its overallcapabilities to deal with various security challenges.

Last year, the government announced a series of reform measures for theIndian Army which included redeployment of nearly 57,000 officers and otherranks as well as ensuring better utilisation of resources.
