Constitutional crisis deepens in Punjab as Governor refuses to step down and take oath from new CM

LAHORE – Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema was removed by the federalgovernment as PTI leader refused to administer the oath to ChiefMinister-elect Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.

The development comes hours after Cheema postponed the swearing-in ceremonyof newly-elected Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz while he heldconsultations with the legal team.

Reports suggest that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has used hisdiscretionary powers to remove Cheema, who has been directed to leave thegovernor house at the earliest. Meanwhile, the premier has also sent asummary to the president in this regard.

PTI leader visited PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at his residence andcondemned the assault that occurred during the voting in the PunjabAssembly on Saturday.

Cheema, one of the pioneer members of the former ruling party, earlierreplaced Chaudhry Sarwar after the ousted PM removed Sarwar for hisdecision to call Punjab Assembly session.
