ISLAMABAD: A disturbing gang rape incident in northern Sindh’s Jacobabad district has drawn widespread attention after a female TikTok content creator alleged that four men assaulted her under the pretext of making videos, while threatening to leak explicit recordings if she continued her online activity.
The case, registered at Jacobabad police station, centres on events that unfolded on 15 February when the victim, accompanied by her husband, reached the residence of one of the accused following a telephone invitation.
According to the first information report, the husband received a call from an unidentified man who encouraged the couple to visit so the woman could create TikTok content. Upon arrival, the husband was asked to remain outside on the grounds that women were present inside the house.
The complainant stated that she entered the premises alone and encountered four men. They offered her water and immediately questioned her participation in TikTok videos, remarking that no woman from the Jakhraani tribe engages in such activities.
The victim further alleged that around 10:30 pm the accused forcibly took her to a room, displayed a pistol to intimidate her, stripped her, and recorded the entire sequence on video. She claimed the men then raped her one after another over a period of approximately three hours before releasing her.
Her husband later told investigators that the perpetrators explicitly informed his wife that the assault served as punishment for creating TikTok videos. They reportedly warned that continued posting would result in the circulation of the obscene footage across the internet.
Police promptly registered a case under relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code pertaining to gang rape, criminal intimidation, and wrongful confinement, in addition to provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act concerning unauthorised video recording.
Senior Superintendent of Police Jacobabad Muhammad Kaleem Malik confirmed to media outlets that one suspect has been arrested while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining three fugitives. He added that the victim underwent a mandatory medico-legal examination to support the investigation.
The incident has reignited debate over the safety of women who pursue digital content creation in conservative rural areas of Pakistan. Social media platforms such as TikTok have gained immense popularity across the country, yet female creators frequently face harassment, threats, and violence from individuals or groups who view such activity as culturally unacceptable.
Official statistics from the Federal Investigation Agency indicate a steady rise in cyber-related crimes against women, including blackmail through leaked private videos. In Sindh alone, police recorded over 1,200 cases of digital harassment and extortion targeting female users between 2023 and 2025.
Local rights organisations have pointed out that tribal norms in districts like Jacobabad often clash with modern social media practices. Women who achieve online visibility are sometimes perceived as challenging traditional gender roles, leading to severe backlash from community members.
Human rights advocates argue that the Jacobabad case exemplifies a broader pattern where alleged moral policing intersects with sexual violence. Similar incidents in southern Punjab and northern Sindh have involved threats of honour-based retribution against women active on digital platforms.
Police sources disclosed that the arrested suspect belongs to the Jakhraani tribe mentioned by the victim during her statement. Investigators are examining mobile phone records, call data, and potential CCTV footage from nearby locations to trace the movements of the accused on the day of the crime.
The victim’s medical report is expected to play a crucial role in establishing the nature and extent of injuries sustained. Forensic analysis of any recovered electronic devices may also help confirm the existence of the alleged video recording.
Civil society groups have called for swift justice and enhanced protection mechanisms for female content creators. They emphasise the need for specialised police units trained in handling technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
