In Iraq, federal forces launch 'major, multi-pronged' assault aimed at retaking disputed northern city of Kirkuk.

The Kurdish Security Council said the assault launched late night was aimed at entering the city and retaking the K-1 military base and nearby oil fields.

Iraqi government forces claimed to have control of “vast areas” in Kirkuk, including oilfields west of the city.

Iraqi state TV said Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has ordered to ensure security in Kirkuk in cooperation with local population and the Peshmerga.

On the other hand, Kurdish police force said they still have all control of the province's disputed oil wells.
