NEW YORK: The United Nations has suspended Russian Tennis Star Maria Sharapova’s goodwill ambassadorship after her drug failure test at the Australian Open.
UN spokesperson said “The United Nations Development Progaramme remains grateful to Maria Sharapova for her support of our work, especially around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster recovery.”
UN claimed that Sharapova supported the Chernobyl disaster for nine years but her role as a goodwill ambassador is suspended as she found positive for meldonium test.
Sharapova donated $100,000 in Belarus to support youth projects in rural areas which suffered from Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.
Sharapova is a highly paid female athlete and had won several major events.
She is facing provocations from her sponsors since she failed dope test on March 7.
She claimed that she forgot to study a mail by Australian Open who announced meldonium as a banned drug and she is using meldonium since her childhood due to disorder problems in body.
Recently, Nike, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer and German luxury car maker Porsche have announced to suspend their ties with her.
