British government gives response over Pakistani request over former PM Nawaz Sharif extradition request

LONDON: British Home Secretary Priti Patel has written to Prime MinisterImran Khan’s adviser on accountability Shahzad Akbar pointing out that theUK government is subject to international law in the case of former primeminister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently residing in London and who thePakistani government wants sent back from London.

The Home Secretary, according to a trusted source, has confirmed that theBritish government would give Pakistan’s extradition request full attentionunder the provision of UK law if a formal request were received. At thesame time, Ms Patel has stressed that the UK is subject to internationallaw and cannot go against the established legal principles.

The source said that Pakistan had asked for the deportation of Nawaz Sharifin a letter sent via British High Commission but a formal extraditionrequest was not filed. The Home Secretary’s letter to Pakistan means thatthe UK will not consider deporting Nawaz Sharif, acting on the deportationrequest made by Pakistan.

On Tuesday a credible source here confirmed that the British Home Secretaryhad replied to Shahzad Akbar’s letter written in October in which thePakistan minister had told Home Secretary Priti Patel that she was “dutybound” to deport Nawaz Sharif to Pakistan.
