New Delhi: Indian Police brutally thrashed the Students of Delhi JamiaMillia Islamia over controversial citizenship law protests.A CCTV footagehas been released showing Delhi Police personnel assaulting students in theuniversity library on the night of December 15 when violence rocked thecampus amid anti-citizenship law protests in the area.
A 45-second video has surfaced in which the Delhi Police can be seenallegedly thrashing students at the reading hall of Delhi’s Jamia MilliaIslamia University on the day when violence broke out at the campus duringprotests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The video shows the police entering the library on the first floor. TheCCTV footage shows the cops brutally beating the students using batons.
As can be seen in the video, armed policemen dressed in helmets andprotective jackets entered the library on the first floor of the MA/MPhilsection and tortured the students while some of the students are runningaway to save their lives.
The police action on students had marked a turning point in protestsagainst the Citizenship Amendment Act with anger at the police andopposition to the controversial law blurring into a unison of protests atcampuses across India.
Police had barged into the campus after four buses were torched in NewFriends Colony nearby during protests against the citizenship act in thelocality.
According to students, police laid siege to the campus, fired tear gasshells and those injured were not even allowed to get medical attention.Students said windows of the library were smashed.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has said that the case has been transferred tothe Crime Branch and an investigation is underway.
Violent protests erupted at the Jamia Millia Islamia university on December15 against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, with protesterspelting stones at the cops. The protests led to violence and arson in whichfour DTC buses, 100 private vehicles and 10 police bikes were damaged.
The police had to use batons to control the violence. Several people wereinjured in the violence.
