Jamal Khashoggi murder: Five Saudi officials face death penalty

RIYADH – Five Saudi officials face the death penalty over the murder ofjournalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was drugged and dismembered inside thekingdom’s Istanbul consulate, Riyadh’s public prosecutor said Thursday.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and vocal dissident, died afterbeing drugged by the five accused and then dismembered, a spokesman for thepublic prosecutor’s office said in the first Saudi acknowledgement of themanner of his killing.

The journalist’s body parts were then handed over to an agent outside theconsulate grounds, the spokesman said.

Saudi officials initially insisted Khashoggi had left the consulate, thensaid he died in an unplanned “rogue operation”. The kingdom’s publicprosecutor Saud al-Mojeb later said he was killed in a premeditated attack.- APP/AFP
