Ramiz Raja, the former PCB chief, did not mince words when it came tocriticizing the decision to include the struggling Fakhar Zaman in theSuper 4 clash against Sri Lanka. This match ultimately resulted inPakistan’s elimination from the 2023 Asia Cup after a two-wicket loss.
Expressing his concerns, Raja highlighted Fakhar Zaman’s recent poor formand troubling body language on the field. He remarked, “Fakhar Zaman’scurrent performance is subpar, and his demeanor on the field is a cause forconcern. I believe Fakhar should consider sitting out voluntarily.Additionally, on a slower pitch, Babar has faced challenges, except for acouple of innings. As captain, he needs to take assertive decisions.”
Raja also expressed disappointment about the absence of two key players,Imam-ul-Haq, sidelined due to back spasms, and Saud Shakeel, who couldn’trecover from a fever and missed the match.
Recounting the situation, Raja said, “On the morning of the match, Inzideclined to play in the semifinals due to sleep deprivation and stomachissues. However, he was pressured to play, as there seemed to be noalternative. He bravely took the field and played an outstanding innings.In Raja’s view, players who are not in perfect condition should be willingto take risks if they aspire to become great players.”
