National Icon Shahid Afridi Receives Pakistan’s Second-Highest Civilian Award

In a significant recognition of his enduring impact on Pakistani cricket, former national team captain Shahid Khan Afridi has been honored with the prestigious Hilal-i-Imtiaz award. The announcement was made by President Asif Ali Zardari during the 2025 Civil Awards ceremony held at Aiwan-i-Sadr on Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.

Afridi, widely celebrated for his explosive batting and charismatic leadership, has been a prominent figure in international cricket for over two decades. His contributions extend beyond the cricket field, encompassing philanthropic efforts and advocacy for youth development through sports. The Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian honor, recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the state in various fields.

The investiture ceremony, attended by senior government officials, military leaders, and distinguished guests, also saw the conferment of awards to other notable personalities across diverse sectors. In the realm of sports, mountaineer Shehroze Kashif and the late equestrian Malik Muhammad Atta were posthumously honored with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz for their outstanding achievements. Additionally, cricketer Sana Mir and discus thrower Haider Ali received the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, while squash player Muhammad Hamza Khan and shooter Mohsin Nawaz were awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz.

The Hilal-i-Imtiaz awarded to Afridi underscores the nation’s recognition of his remarkable contributions to sports and his status as a national icon. The formal conferment of the award will take place during the Pakistan Day ceremony on March 23, 2026.
