US Embassy in Islamabad responds to news of diplomat leaving Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: US Embassy in Islamabad has responded to the news of US diplomatleaving Pakistan.

Military Attache Col Joseph Emanuel Hall left for the United States onMonday evening, the US Embassy confirmed.

On April 7, Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall ran a red light and rammed into amotorcycle killing one national. He was let go by police officials inIslamabad after the accident as the law — Vienna Convention on DiplomaticRelations, 1961 — provided the diplomat immunity from criminal prosecution.

According to sources, the local police had handed over all record relatedto Colonel Hall to US officials.

Hall is a certified envoy who enjoys diplomatic immunity, the sourcesadded. Pakistan’s criminal, civil, and administrative laws are notapplicable to the US envoy.

The US government had decided against withdrawing Hall’s diplomaticimmunity, said sources.
