Significant reduction in terrorism in 2018 in erstwhile FATA

BAJAUR – The overall security situation in the newly merged tribaldistricts (erstwhile FATA) has saw a significant improvement during theyear 2018, due to the ongoing successful operation against terrorists andcrackdown against militants by Pak Army in the region, says Annual SecurityReport issued by Fata Research Centre on Tuesday.

The report noted a total 127 terrorist incidents in 2018, 63 terroristattacks (50 percent) targeted the security forces while 58 attacks (45percent) were directed against civilians.

The violent incidents of both terrorism and counter-terrorism, resulted ina total of 366 casualties – 152 killed and 214 injured – in all the KPTribal districts, marking a significant decrease of 70 percent in overallcasualties.

The reports further said that in terms of volatility, the present NorthWaziristan tribal district, where repatriation of internally displacedperson (IDPs) was going on after full-fledged military operationZarb-e-Azb, remained the most turbulent one after 58 terrorism incidentswere recorded in the district during the reporting year compared to 27 suchincidents in the previous year.

The Bajaur tribal district stood second with 21 terrorist incidents,followed by Khyber and South Waziristan, where 18 and 16 terroristincidents took place respectively. Although only three incidents ofterrorism were reported in Orakzai tribal district, however they remainedmore significant due to massive number of civilian casualties in theseattacks.

Senior Security Analyst at FATA Research Centre Irfan udDin has explained that the decline in terrorism incidents in the year 2018wasno doubt illustrates the effectiveness of military operations in weakeningtheoperational capacity of terrorist groups.

He however said that some militants’ organizations would surely try tostrength their capacity, but the security forces would not let any outletsto carry out their anti peace activities in the region.

He expressed the hope that law and order situation in the tribal districtswould see more improvement in the ongoing year compared to previous year.

He said that law and order situation in the tribal districts would furtherimprove in the ongoing year following the effective and result orientedactivities of security forces, adding the law and ordersituation would help to boost the socio-economic situation of the tribaldistricts.
