The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the execution of twomilitary personnel, charging them with military treason and other offenses, according to the state news agency (SPA). On Thursday, SPA reported thatthese individuals were subject to due process, having been referred to adesignated court where they received all necessary legal guarantees. Theyadmitted to the allegations against them, leading to their convictions andsubsequent death sentences.

Unfortunately, specific details regarding the case were not disclosed bythe Saudi Press Agency. This development occurs within the context of asignificant increase in executions within Saudi Arabia. AmnestyInternational’s Middle East and North Africa Director, Heba Morayef, revealed that the country had already executed 100 individuals earlier inthe year.

Furthermore, 2022 marked a grim record for Saudi Arabia, with 196executions – the highest annual count in the last three decades, asdocumented by Amnesty International. This figure was three times higherthan the previous year and a shocking seven times more than 2020.

In November 2022, Saudi authorities lifted a moratorium on executionsrelated to drug offenses, as announced by the Saudi Human RightsCommission. This moratorium had been in effect since January 2020.
