ISLAMABAD – The United Nations (UN) has listed India among 38 shamefulcountries, which it said had carried out reprisals or intimidation againstpeople cooperating with it on human rights, through killings, torture andarbitrary arrests, basically over the human rights violations in occupiedKashmir and other parts of the country.

Israel too is named in the list.

According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), allegations of ill-treatment,surveillance, criminalisation, and public stigmatisation campaignstargeting victims and human rights defenders were also included on the list.

“Authorities repeatedly charged human rights activists with terrorism orcharged them for cooperating with foreign entities or damaging the state’sreputation or security,” it added.

“There is a worrying bias in the use of national security arguments andcounter-terrorism strategies by states as an argument for barring access bycommunities and civil society organisations to the UN,” the report said.

Women supporting the UN had reported intimidations including rape and beingsubject to online slander attacks, and UN staff often encountered peoplewho were too afraid to speak to them, even at UN headquarters in New Yorkand Geneva.
