ISLAMABAD – Former president and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Co chairmanAsif Ali Zardari has warned institutions over entering into politicaldomain.

He has called upon all institutions to work within their constitutionallimits.

In his message on the eve of the International Democracy day SaturdaySeptember 15, the former president said that in addition to rule of law,transparency, across the board accountability and tolerance of dissentdemocracy also called for respecting constitutional limits by allinstitutions.

Threats to democracy have changed with time, the former President said.

There was a time when democracy was directly assaulted and this assaultprotected by devices like doctrine of necessity, the legal frame workorders (LFOs), provisional constitutional orders (PCOs) upheld by PCOjudges.

The nature of threats to democracy has changed overtime, he said.

Democracy is under threat from the militants and extremists who wish toimpose their agenda by force and not through Parliament, he said.

The celebrations today should also enhance peoples’ awareness of the newforms of threats to democracy and the need to guard against them, he said.
