British Officials strongly respond over arrest of Jang Group CEO Mir Shakilur Rahman in Pakistan

LONDON: British Officials strongly respond over arrest of Jang Group CEOMir Shakilur Rahman in Pakistan.

The British government and members of Parliament on Friday condemned thearrest of Editor-in-Chief of the Jang Geo Media Group Mir Shakil-ur-Rahmanby the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a 34-year-old fake case andthe shutdown of Geo channel across the country by the Pakistan ElectronicMedia Authority (PEMRA).

The UK officials called on Pakistani authorities to stop the illegalactions against the country’s largest independent media house and let GeoNews operate without interference.

UK Minister of State for Foreign Office and Department of InternationalDevelopment (DFID) for South Asia, Commonwealth and United Nations LordTariq Ahmed was among the officials who expressed concerned regarding thearrest.

“Very concerned by reports of the arrest of Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, the ownerof Jang Media Group in Pakistan.

The freedom to hold and express views without censorship, intimidation orunnecessary restriction is a cornerstone of democracy,” tweeted Lord Tariq.
