In Islamabad, the Caretaker Law Minister, Ahmad Irfan Aslam, convened ameeting with provincial law ministers to address matters concerning theforthcoming general elections. During this gathering, all the law ministersstressed the importance of upholding democratic principles and ensuring thesmooth execution of the elections. There was unanimous agreement that theconstitution should be considered in its entirety.
According to the statement, the constitution grants exclusive authority tothe Election Commission of Pakistan for overseeing general elections andannouncing their dates. The provincial law ministers emphasized thenecessity of holding general elections for the National and four provincialassemblies concurrently to promote unity among all constituent regions.
The discussion emphasized the government’s commitment to conducting free,fair, and transparent elections in Pakistan while adhering to democraticgovernance principles. This meeting followed Prime Minister Anwaarul HaqKakar’s recent statement affirming that only the Election Commission ofPakistan has the authority to announce election dates.
PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar also mentioned during an interview with a privatenews channel that the Election Commission would determine the upcomingelections’ date. He explained that Parliament had passed a law grantingthis power to the election commission. He assured that the elections wouldproceed in accordance with existing laws and that there was no intention toprolong the caretaker government’s tenure.
