Incarcerated PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry was admitted to a hospital in Lahore on Wednesday as his health deteriorated due to a severe kidney infection, his lawyer confirmed.
On Monday, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore sentenced Chaudhry and other PTI leaders to 10 years in prison in cases related to the May 9 riots. The following day, the court ordered the confiscation of properties owned by the convicted leaders.
Chaudhry, along with other PTI figures, filed appeals in the Lahore High Court on Saturday against their ATC convictions. In his petitions, he requested the court to suspend his sentence and conviction, grant him bail, and, in a separate plea, set aside his conviction in the interest of justice.
Speaking to Dawn.com, Chaudhry’s lawyer, Rana Mudassar, confirmed that various tests were being conducted after Chaudhry was shifted to the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute in Lahore on Wednesday morning.
“He is suffering from a severe kidney infection and has seven gallstones,” Mudassar said. The lawyer added that Chaudhry had previously received treatment at Kot Lakhpat jail, but his condition had not improved. “He has lost 22 kilograms.”
Last month, a Lahore ATC had sentenced Chaudhry, along with Dr. Yasmin, Cheema, Rashid, and others, to 10 years in prison over the May 9 riots case involving violence on Sherpao Bridge.
Chaudhry, who has a history of heart problems, was reportedly admitted to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on February 20 after experiencing heart pain. In March, a Senate committee issued a stern warning regarding the failure to implement Chaudhry’s production order, highlighting potential consequences for non-compliance.
