Pakistan gets resource for thousands of megawatts of cheap electricity for decades

KARACHI - Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) has unearthed the first layer of coal at Thar Coal Block II, at a depth of hundred and forty meters below the surface, reported Radio Pakistan. link>

The mining firm’s machinery took out the first layer estimated over two billion tons of coal resources in Thar Coal Block II five months ahead of schedule time.

The entire coal production will be supplied to Engro Powergen Thar Limited which starts power generation before the end of this year.

Both these projects are part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and are being constructed in collaboration with Chinese Contractors.

SECMC Chief Executive Officer Shamsuddin Shaikh has said that the successful extraction of indigenous coal can produce thousands of megawatts of cheap electricity for many decades.
