New developments in Pervaiz Elahi arrest case

A request was submitted to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, urging anexpedited hearing of the bail petition on behalf of former Punjab ChiefMinister Parvez Elahi. Kaisara Elahi, Elahi’s wife, filed this petition inthe apex court, asserting that his arrest was unlawful and emphasizing thefundamental constitutional right to freedom of movement.

The petition implored the court to promptly address the bail plea.Regarding the withdrawal of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) order,the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Islamabad informed the high court that thedetention order issued for the PTI president had been revoked.

During today’s hearing presided over by Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri,Elahi’s petition against his MPO detention was considered, with DCIslamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon present. Although Elahi and the DC weresummoned to court, the PTI president was absent due to his incarceration inRawalpindi’s Adiala jail. The DC reported that the MPO detention order hadbeen lifted, leading to the dismissal of the former Punjab CM’s petition bythe IHC. Additionally, the court instructed the DC to provide informationabout the current FIR under which Elahi was detained.

Last week, Elahi’s wife filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing theLahore High Court’s decision to dismiss a plea seeking her husband’srelease following his rearrest. In her petition, she named the caretakerPunjab government, Punjab interior secretary, and the provincial inspectorgeneral of police as respondents.

She requested the apex court to overturn the LHC’s September 6 decision andsecure her husband’s release. She also sought restraining orders from theSupreme Court to prevent her husband’s possible rearrest in any undisclosedcase and highlighted her husband’s age and his lifelong commitment to thecountry’s betterment. The petition further detailed the Anti-CorruptionDepartment’s bribery case against her husband and described the police’sbehavior during the investigation.
