In a Major Setback, ATC Orders Property Seizure of Four PTI Leaders

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Tuesday ordered the confiscation of properties belonging to PTI leaders Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed — a day after sentencing them to 10 years in prison in two May 9 violence cases.

On Monday, ATC-I Judge Manzer Ali Gill found the four leaders guilty in cases linked to the Shadman police station attack and the burning of police vehicles near Jinnah House. The court also imposed a fine of Rs600,000 on each of them. Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, however, was acquitted in both cases.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, Judge Gill reaffirmed the convictions, ordered the seizure of the convicted leaders’ assets, and issued jail warrants, which were handed over to the prison superintendent.

The verdict also noted that PTI leaders Aliya Hamza and Sanam Javed had been sentenced to five years in prison in the Shadman case. The judge stated that if Qureshi was not wanted in any other case, he should be released — but his release remains blocked due to pending May 9-related cases.

The court had reserved its judgment on Saturday after completing hearings at Kot Lakhpat Jail, which were conducted in two sessions the same day. Last month, the ATC had similarly acquitted Qureshi while handing 10-year prison terms to Dr Yasmin, Chaudhry, Cheema, and Rashid in a separate May 9 riots case concerning violence on Sherpao Bridge.
