BREAKING: Israel Moon Lander crashes while landing on Moon

JERUSALEM – Israel’s Beresheet moon lander crashed while attempting toland at moon.

It has failed in its attempt to land on the moon. An initial story will beposted shortly.

To date, three countries have landed on the moon. Today, that number maybecome four.

Israel launched its first lunar mission, a spacecraft called *Beresheet*link, on Feb. 21, ridingpiggyback on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It spent *six weeks*link orbitingEarth in leisurely, ever-widening circles before slipping into orbit aroundthe moon on April 4.

It remained there for a week, preparing for the defining moment of themission: attempting to touch down softly on the moon’s surface.
