*ISLAMABAD: *Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday said that withextensive experience and expertise in the nuclear field, Pakistan is wellplaced as a services-provider in various programmes and activities ofInternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
He was talking to Director General IAEA Yukiya Amano who is in Pakistan ona three-day official visit
Issues related to cooperation between Pakistan and IAEA were discussedduring the meeting. The PM appreciated the positive role played by the IAEAin the promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear technology in Pakistan.
During his stay, the IAEA Director is scheduled to visit various centres ofPakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in Islamabad, Faisalabad andKarachi.
“As a founding member of IAEA, Pakistan maintains deep cooperation withIAEA in areas of nuclear power, industrial application of nucleartechniques, non-destructive testing, food and agriculture, soilimprovement, radiation-induced mutation, radiation oncology and nuclearmedicines, environmental protection and isotope hydrology,” said a pressrelease.
Widely known as the world’s “nuclear watchdog” organisation within theUnited Nations (UN) family, the IAEA is the international centre forcooperation in the nuclear field. It works with its member states andmultiple partners worldwide to promote the peaceful use of nucleartechnology.
Official visit of the IAEA chief is of key national interest for Pakistanas many new vistas of cooperation between IAEA and Pakistan would beexplored during the visit.
This would be the second visit of Yukiya Amano to Pakistan, earlier hevisited Pakistan from 10 to 12 March in 2014.
