Arrest Warrants issued against KP Information Minister Shaukat Ali Yousafzai

ISLAMABAD – An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad ordered to arrest KhyberPakhtunkhwa (KP) Information Minister, Shaukat Ali Yousafzai on Tuesday.

The court issued non-bailable arrest warrants against the lawmaker inconnection with an attack on the Parliament House and Pakistan Television(PTV) building during the 126-day long sit-in staged by PakistanTehreek-i-Insaaf in 2014.

ATC judge Syed Kausar Abbasi Zaidi issued the warrants for Yousafzai as hehad repeatedly failed to appear before the court; the court ordered thatthe provincial minister be arrested and presented before the court.

The court also issued non-bailable arrest warrants against 26 workers,allegedly belonging to the ruling party.

Police had invoked relevant sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act against thepremier Imran Khan and President Arif Alvi, Finance Minister Asad Umar,Foreign MinisterShah Mehmood Qureshi, Shafqat Mahmood and Raja KhurramNawaz for inciting violence during the 2014 sit-in at D-Chowk in Islamabad.

The PTI leaders were in opposition during the protests staged in theaftermath of alleged electoral rigging in 2013 General Elections.

According to the prosecution, three people had been killed, 26 othersinjured, while 60 were arrested during the violence.

During the hearing of the case today, the court did not address theapplications seeking the acquittal of senior PTI leaders ImranKhan, Jahangir Khan Tareen and Alvi, as well as petitions for permanentexemptions of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Shafqat Mahmood and JahangirTareen from appearing before the court.

ATC would resume hearing into the case on March 28.
