KABUL – The Pakistani military says documents pertaining to the managementof the long porous border between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been sentto the Afghan government in a bid to finalize a joint mechanism for themanagement of the line, Khaama Press has reported.
A spokesman for the Pakistani military Gen. Asif Ghafoor made the remarksduring an interview with a private TV channel on Thursday.
He said several issues relating to the Durand Line will be resolve if amechanism is finalized but he did not elaborate further in this regard.
Gen. Ghafoor further added that there would be significant improvement ifthe border management work is completed by next year, emphasizing that bothcountries have take some needed measures.
This comes as the Afghan officials have long been insisting that theongoing violence in Afghanistan has roots with the leadership councils andsafe havens of the Taliban and Haqqani network in Pakistan but theofficials in Islamabad are saying that no safe haven exist in the countryfor the terror groups.
However, the US officials also insist that the Taliban, Haqqani network, and other terror groups posing threats to Afghanistan and the US forcesstill have sanctuaries and freedom of action in Pakistan.
A senior US State Department official also said last week that “We believethat there is significant evidence that leadership of the Haqqani Networkresides inside Pakistan and is able to plan and execute from Pakistanattacks inside Afghanistan. So the disagreement is much more about thosefacts than it is on our overarching goals in the strategy. And we need themto address these sanctuaries in order for us to be able to be enabled tosucceed in Afghanistan.”
