PTI government faces international association pressure over new social media rules

The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has approached Prime Minister Imran Khanwith concerns over the lack of transparency on the consultation on socialmedia rules stating that the rules if improperly formulated would activelyharm the business environment and its attractiveness as an investmentdestination for technology companies.

The AIC is an industry association of leading internet and technologycompanies including Airbnb, Amazon. Apple, Cloudflare, Expedia Group,Facebook, Google, SAP, Grab, LinkedIn, LINE, Rakuten, Twitter, Yahoo(Verizon Media), and Booking.com.

In a letter addressed to PM Khan, the AIC has stated that it is a follow upregarding the “Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) rules 2020 or theRemoval and Blocking of unlawful content (procedures, oversight, andsafeguards) Rules 2020”.

The coalition thanked the PM for personal intervention in suspending theprevious version of the Citizen Protection against Online Harm rules thathad failed to uphold internationally recognized rights to individualexpression and privacy as guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan.Further, the PM has been appreciated for directing the government towardsinitiating a proper multi-stakeholder consultation on the revised set ofrules.
