President set to announce date for General Elections

Sources indicated that President Arif Alvi might soon disclose theforthcoming general election date in the nation. These reports surfacedfollowing a meeting between the president and interim Law Minister AhmedIrfan Aslam on Monday, where the topic of general elections was discussed.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that the law minister, the attorneygeneral, and the president’s legal advisors have cautioned against makingsuch an announcement. They argue that doing so could lead to legal andpolitical turmoil within the country and create economic uncertainty duringa critical period of economic recovery.

It’s important to mention that while Article 48 of the constitution grantsthe president the authority to announce elections, recent amendments to theElection Act have delegated this power solely to the Election Commission ofPakistan.

This situation arose during the elections’ impasse in Khyber Pakhtunkhwaand Punjab when President Alvi attempted to set an election date for May14, but the plan couldn’t be executed due to insufficient funds allocatedto the ECP by the government.
