NEW DELHI – Indian Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh made madean appeal to Pakistan over the Kartarpur Corridor project.
He on Sunday requested that the neighbouring country must adhere to thecommitment made.
Work on Kartarpur corridor has been going on for months on both sides ofthe International Border (IB) at the Dera Baba Nanak town in Gurdaspurdistrict, where the corridor is being built to provide Indian devotees easyaccess to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, the final resting place ofGuru Nanak. After India’s decision to revoke Article 370 in Jammu andKashmir – the country’s internal matter, Pakistan reacted by downgradingdiplomatic ties and suspending trade through Kashmir.
According to news agency ANI, Amarinder has said that this should nothappen as the project is of extremely high religious importance to the Sikhcommunity.
Previously, both India and Pakistan had announced that the corridor wouldbe opened before the 550th Parkash Gurpurb (birth anniversary) of GuruNanak, which is on November 2019. Sources on Saturday said that India hadissued a reminder after there was no response from Pakistan on technicallevel talks on the corridor.
Just last week, Pakistan’s foreign ministery had said that work on thecorridor would progress as per schedule.
