UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep distress over thecomplete siege of the Gaza Strip by Israel. He revealed that he hadrecently convened a significant meeting of senior UN leaders to address theunprecedented developments in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Guterres strongly condemned the attacks carried out by groups like Hamas onIsraeli towns and villages in the Gaza periphery, resulting in the loss ofover 800 Israeli lives and causing more than 2,500 injuries. He emphasizedthe urgent need for medical supplies, food, fuel, and humanitarianassistance, along with ensuring access for humanitarian personnel.
The UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of facilitating the entryof essential supplies into Gaza, and he assured that the United Nationswould persist in its efforts to provide aid to meet these critical needs.
He called upon all parties involved to grant the United Nations access todeliver vital humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilians who aretrapped and vulnerable in the Gaza Strip.
Furthermore, Guterres appealed to the international community to mobilizeimmediate humanitarian support for these relief efforts. He underscored thenecessity of breaking the cycle of violence, hatred, and polarization,advocating for Israel’s legitimate security needs and the Palestinians’clear prospects for establishing their own state to be realized.
