India faces diplomatic setback at the UN Secuirty Council

At the United Nations Security Council, India has again failed to mustersupport from members to assume the chairmanship of some of the mostimportant subsidiary bodies.

According to diplomatic sources, the Indians pushed for, but failed, tosecure the chairmanship of the powerful Al-Qaeda/Da’esh Sanctions Committeeand the Non-proliferation Committee and also to become the custodian of theAfghanistan file in the Security Council.

A Council source told APP that India tried its utmost, until the very lastmoment, to get this position, lobbying intensively in New York and in thecapitals of the Council’s members, but it failed to convince them. AnAfrican diplomat said the work of the Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee is tooimportant to be given in the hands of the Indians.

Similarly, India’s bid for the Non-proliferation Committee encounteredresistance in the Security Council as many Western countries consider thatIndia is not suited to head this important panel since it is not a party tothe Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
